Elizabeth Palmer Peabody

(1804-1894)

Born in Billerica, Massachusetts, May 16, 1804. Peabody opened the first English-speaking kindergarten at 15 Pinkey St. in Boston in 1860. She, along with her sister Mary Mann, published The Moral Culture of Infancy and Kindergarten Guide in 1863.
In 1867 she travelled to Europe to observe "authentic" kindergartens and returned to America turning away from her "intellectual" teaching methods to a more Froebelian "play-centered" approach. At age sixty-four, Peabody began publishing the monthly Kindergarten Messenger, which documented the spread of the first U.S. Kindergarten movement (off and on) from 1873 to 1878. She translated Froebel's Education of Man and Mother-Play and Nursery Songs for inclusion in the publication.
